Eagles Win Super Bowl LIX

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to win their second Super Bowl in franchise history.

The Eagles dominated almost every category in this game, especially shutting down Patrick Mahomes and limiting the Cheifs’ offensive production. Mahomes was sacked 6 times, threw 2 interceptions, and also gave up a fumble due to a strip sack. The Eagles did not send a single blitz and all 6 sacks were credited to the Eagles D-Line who kept Mahomes under constant pressure the entire game.

Rookie DB Cooper Dejean had one of the most pivotal moments in the game by intercepting Mahomes in the second quarter and returning it 38 yards for a touchdown. This play gave the Eagles a 17-0 lead right before halftime and provided a huge momentum swing in favor of the Eagles. It was also the rookies birthday, making him the first player to ever score a touchdown on their birthday in the Super Bowl.

For the Eagles offense, Jalen Hurts played a methodical and commanding game, putting up 2 throwing TD’s, 1 rushing TD, 72 rushing yards, and throwing 17/22 for 221 yards. Hurts also won Super Bowl MVP, while winning his first Lombardi Trophy. Davonta Smith lead the Eagles in receiving, with 4 receptions, 69 yards, and 1 TD. MVP finalist Saquon Barkley did not have one of his many record breaking games, but his 97 all purpose yards helped the Eagles execute a balanced offensive attack that overwhelmed their opponents.

The Chiefs and the Eagles met two years ago in Super Bowl LVII, where the Cheifs snuck past with a 38-35 win. With that in mind, the Birds were coming into this game with revenge. During Super Bowl LVII, the Eagles did not sack Patrick Mahomes a single time, which eventually led to the Cheifs offensive linemen wearing shirts saying “0 SACKS” during their Super Bowl Parade. Jalen Hurts also told the media that his iPhone wallpaper was the red and gold confetti from when they lost to the Cheifs in LVII. This game was personal for the Eagles, and their dominating performance proves how much more they wanted to win.

Lane Johnsons message to his teammates before LIX

The Cheifs on the other hand, were looking to write the history books becoming the first ever NFL team to win 3 Super Bowls in a row. Their underwhelming performance was one the worst performances of Patrick Mahomes career. All-Pro TE Travis Kelce told the media, “that was the worst game we’ve played all season”. At 35 years old with many career accomplishments, Kelce is likely to retire before the start of next season, although he has not come to an official decision yet. Kelce said, "I'm not making any crazy decisions yet, right now the biggest thing is just being there for my teammates and being there for my coaches, understanding there's a lot that goes into this thing.” With that being said, the Cheifs front office has given Kelce until March 14th to decide on his future with the team.
